Guerilla Ad
Our Guerilla ads were meant to bring attention to issues in today's society. My partner and I chose to focus on body image in our ad. We had to do a write up explaining the ad and the message we were trying to convey.
How Advertising Affects Teen Body Image
Media has a big influence on teen girls through models used in advertisements. Advertisers try to portray that the image of beauty is thinness, using models who are about 5’10” and 90 lbs, when the average girl is around 5’4” and 130 pounds. Girls start becoming anorexic or bulimic to try to match the figures of these models. The media presents being skinny as a desirable trait and has become the standard. Teenage girls feel that if they look like them that they will be accepted.
We are trying to show that media has a negative effect on how teenage girls view themselves. We are also trying to convince people that advertising using tiny models is a bad influence to the average teen girl because the ads represent that beauty is based on thinness and physical beauty instead of inner beauty. Our advertisement targets teenage girls who are between the ages of 12-25 because they are the most concerned with their body image and have the desire to be skinny because they think it is attractive. Our ad appeals to the type of girl that does anything to become just like the models in the advertisements. We are trying to convince people that if they are not happy with their looks they should not turn to eating disorders as a problem solver because it does more harm than good in the end.
The advertising technique that we used was emotional appeal through fear. We want to shock our audience into the horrific effects that eating disorders have on the body. The images that we have used illustrate what the consequences are when they have an eating disorder. It is meant to show the disgusting methods and horrible effects that go into achieving the desired thinness. The images connect with the audience because the girl in the ad is young and she is in a school bathroom which shows that she is in the target age. The images also show that she is trying to throw up in order to lose weight. Her mindset is that if she is thinner then she will be accepted.
